What is the most important part of a grow room?
Why Grow Room Air Circulation is Important?
Believe it or not, our plants can suffocate just like we can. Have you ever been in a crowded room for an extensive period of time? It will start getting hot, humid, and sometimes hard to breathe. Plants will get the same way. Plant leaves give off moisture into the surrounding air. This action of transpiration acts like a siphon in some ways. This action allows the plant to gather up moisture from its roots.Transpiration is a process that starts at the leaves. There are little openings on the leaves called stomata. These stomata let CO2 and oxygen into the plant to start the photosynthesis process. When these stomata are open, the plant will release water vapor into the air. The air circulation around the grow room is important. If the relative humidity levels build up around the plants then dust and pollen can clog up these pores resulting in poor plant growth. Another reason is all the CO2 will be removed around the plant causing dead zones in the air. These dead zones can also clog the pores of the plant. On the flip side, too much CO2 can suffocate a plant just like us.
Benefits of Grow Room Air Circulation
- Reduction in mold and bacteria - Mold will grow where ever there is high humidity and stagnant air. When air is not moving around your plants the moisture built up from watering the plants and air humidity cannot evaporate properly causing mold to develop. A fan will help airflow around the leaves and at the base of the plant around the soil to help water evaporation.
- Assistance in pollination - This is not as big of a factor, but airflow allows proper humidity and temperature control. Pollen will clump together with high humidity levels and plants will not release pollen at optimal levels if the temperature is not ideal.
- Pest deterrent - moving air makes it tuff for common plant pests to land on the plants. Having a top dry layer in the soil will make it less likely that the insects will reproduce in the soil. Airflow around your plants will make it a challenge for bugs to land on your plants to make it home. Have you ever noticed how few mosquitos are around during windy days? Its the same concept.
- Strengthens plants - A slight breeze is very beneficial to strengthening the branches of the plans allowing for more root growth and larger yields of fruit and vegetables.
- Keeps temperature constant - The heat from the lamps inside the room where you plant can build up in zones around the plants. This heat will damage the plants or lead to poor growth. Grow lights can put off very little heat or a lot of heat depending on what type of lights you are using. This could create a micro heat zone around the plants that you do not want. Usually, plants can get damage if they're stashed in the corner where heat becomes trapped. Just by moving the air around the plant can solve this.
- Improves humidity levels - Without proper air flow, you will have uncontrollable humidity levels which can lead to various issues. I touched base on this subject just a minute ago, but I would like to go into further detail. You want your relative humidity levels to be above 30% and below 60%. If relative humidity levels are below 30% then this can lead to improper evaporation and make it a challenge for the plant to draw up water and nutrients from their roots. If relative humidity levels are above 60% then you run into possible mold growth and the plant starts to have trouble consuming CO2. Humidity levels can be monitored using a hygrometer. They can be very basic and just monitor the relative humidity or they can control devices to automate the humidity levels.
- Improves oxygen and CO2 levels - by moving the air in your room, you are bringing in fresh co2 for your plants to consume. CO2 will deplete fast depending on the size of the room you have. This will contribute to poor growth.
Creating the right environment
You can always choose a grow tent setup with a built-in ventilation system or build an effective air exchange system by yourself. Anyway, to create the perfect environment for your cannabis garden, you will need to do two things: make the air move around your grow tent and create an effective air exhaust to vent the old air out of the growing space.
When it comes to placing the grow room fans, remember that you need the air circling both above and under the plants. Plus, you need to make sure that every corner of your grow room gets enough fresh air. It would be better to use a few small oscillating fans since they are cheap and produce a nice breeze. Plus, you will need at least one strong fan to create a working exhaust system.
Just remember never to point a strong fan directly at a plant, otherwise, the leaves and stems will get damaged. Keep an eye on your plants: if you see that the leaves near the fan started to claw, you'd better replace the tent fan.
As for the size of a fan, it totally depends on the size of your grow room or tent. There are three most popular sizes of the exhaust fans: 4″, 6″, and 8″. A 4-inch exhaust fan works perfectly for the smaller spaces like small grow tents or portable grow rooms. Just remember to always check the size of a hold because most air-cooled hoods and ducting have a 6" opening. Otherwise, you will need to buy a special converter.
